Agricultural Projects
Tribal groups in northern Thailand often struggle to make enough money to support their families. Land for traditional farming methods is often limited due to population growth and government regulations that aim to protect designated National Parks. Areas set aside for National Parks were once farmed by hilltribes. In addition, external factors such as free trade agreements between Thailand and other nations have

resulted in lower prices for the crops produced by hilltribe communities. These issues combine to create a complex and difficult situation that MMF is attempting address through sustainable economic and agricultural development.

Poor roads, limited transport and a lack of education all contribute to a situation where tribal people often have no choice but to sell their goods to lowland businessmen at prices considerably lower than the market price. As a result, it is increasingly common for tribal people to leave their villages in order to supplement their family's income by working as labourers in the city.

Mekong Minority Foundation helps manage economic development/agricultural projects in three areas in Chiang Rai Province - Wawi Valley , Upper Mae Yao , and Wiang PaPao.

Three Economic/Agricultural Initiatives

1. The Wawi Project , which has been running six years, encourages the establishment of small group projects, such as fish-raising and organic fertiliser production. These activities have led to the establishment of an agricultural network that has two components - alearning center and a savings group.
2. The Sustainable Agriculture in Upper Mae Yao (SAMY) Project promotes sustainable agricultural development to help villagers generate income. The project also provides training for women in indigenous sewing and handicraft techniques (pictured right), as a means of generating income, while nurturing cultural traditions. In addition, drinking water systems and kitchen gardens have been developed, and training in money management and environmental conservation is occurring.

3. The Wiang Pa Pao Quality of Life Development Project was developed with the help of a local partner . It focuses on livestock raising and agricultural development.

Savings groups, biogas development, and fish pond development are also taking place.
