Education and Learning: Milagros Sponsorship Program, Minority Girls Sponsorship Project (SLS) and Minority Youth Project (MYP)

These three projects work together to educate and empower youth who are in primary school through University. While engaging in Christian ministry, students gain leadership skills and a heart for serving people.

SLS is a program funded by Mercer Island Church of Washington State. The program provides education to tribal girls who are at risk of entering the sex trade or other dangerous environments. Education provides a way of overcoming poverty and helping equip these young women with the life, decision making, and job skills necessary to pursue productive futures. This is also an opportunity to train and equip young women to become leaders. The program mostly funds girls in primary and high school, but occasionally covers University costs for those young women who choose to go to college.

Milagros Foundation partners with organizations who train youth ministry workers. While Milagros provides the full cost of education and living expenses for students attending University, MMF trains those students for ministry work through MYP II (below). These students are committed to involvement in MMF ministries and their tribal communities.

Milagros students participate in MYP II (Minority Youth Project, Phase II), becoming part-time volunteers with MMF. The project is the second and final phase of a minority youth project aimed at building the leadership capacity of tribal leaders in Northern Thailand . MYP II aims to work with these youth to build tribal leaders of influence who are proud of their culture and who will contribute to the sustainable development of their traditional communities. MYP II students learn about ministry work, engage with the community, gain a servant's heart and a passion for improving the quality of life for their people.

The MYP II project is unique because during the past three years it has sought to build a bridge between minority youth who have moved from their traditional village lives to seek educational opportunities and their tribal communities. The aim of the project is to reconnect target youth with their traditional communities. Students are asked to return to their home villages and share what they have learned, pass on training they have experienced under MYP, as well as implement and manage leadership initiatives.

Many of the youth have already established strong links between their groups and local churches. Previously, staff trained youth leaders in writing proposals to access funds available through the government. Several youth leaders have already had success in this area. The Karen youth of Huai Khom village received a 50,000 Baht environmental grant from a Bangkok-based company after winning a national environment award. The local church, local government authorities and the traditional communities the youth come from all play a key role in the project.
